How can we expect to influence our students or the culture if we can’t or won’t change our own behaviors first?
This is why it is so important to start small. We must start with ourselves. Whether that means eating healthier, sleeping better, breaking addictions, or finally starting that project we’ve been postponing for years, we must start with ourselves.
We are a part of the “culture” we are trying to influence. Whatever change/influence we want to make in the culture or our students, we must make in ourselves first.
If we want our students to become leaders, we must learn to lead.
If we want our students to be successful producers, we must learn to produce.
If we want our students to be happy…
…we must be happy.
This is why it is so important to do the work necessary to become a master educator and a master of our lives. If we take care of ourselves, we will notice a change in our life and our environment.
There is a necessary level of selfishness in order to be selfless. For more information on this, check out my blog entitled “Scene Safety – Placing the Self First.”
